Dorset House 1Planning permission has been granted to develop the site of a former 1980’s care home into a £3.5M flagship state-of-the-art facility, specialising in dementia care.

As part of the Design Team for a new build care home, located off Station Road in Wallsend,  Avoca Consulting Engineers are contributing to the enhanced design features and technology to support residents and staff for people living with dementia.

Following a comprehensive demolition and site clearance a brand new building will be constructed, including comprehensive landscaping and external works.

Jim Houghton, Director at Avoca Consulting Engineers, said: “We are delighted at receiving planning approval for the scheme.  Whilst the process has been long and difficult, working alongside the Planning Authority, Dementia Care and consultations with the community, plans were approved for the development of a 52 bed residential care home with 8 flats for assisted living".

"Design issues for dementia have played an extremely important role within this scheme.  Thinking of the changing needs of older people, we have strived to ensure we take into account current best practices. To enable us to do this we have held regular workshops with the client and visited training experts from the care sector."

Designed by Newcastle-based architectural practice, Coachhouse 8 on behalf of Eothen Homes, the project team also includes Structural Engineers; Portland Consulting Engineers and Cost Consultants Todd Milburn Partnership.

The scheme will embrace environmental initiatives by incorporating sustainable energy sources such as photovoltaic arrays and air source heat pumps.
