Construction is now well underway on a new multi-million pound factory on the banks of the River Tyne.

North-east based Avoca Consulting Engineers, has undertaken the full design of the mechanical and electrical works for the £30 million development to be named Newcaflex for expanding cable maker Duco Ltd.

The four-hectare development is the first of its kind within the UK, consisting of a new manufacturing plant and offices.  The impressive 60-metre height of the building is the same as a 20-23 storey building and will become a prominent landmark building both along the riverside and in Walker area.

Avoca’s Project Director Jim Houghton said “From our initial involvement working with Duco in develop their performance criteria and specific design requirements, we have subsequently been novated across to Balfour Beatty Engineering Services to carry out the detailed design for the project. The whole process has gone extremely smoothly and we are looking forward to the building being made live next month”.

The sustainable ‘Design and Build’ development with Balfour Beatty will significantly contribute to the local economy creating up to 140 jobs whilst expanding Duco’s new technologies for the growing offshore energy sector.

Building work for the scheme started in Spring 2012  and the development should be completed by early 2014
